Chapter Sixteen

- Josie -

The raindrops fell steadily from an evenly gray sky. I made a dash from my car to the porch, my breath forming small clouds in the crisp, damp air. The once-vibrant hues of summer had surrendered to the muted tones of fall, as if the world itself had donned a more somber attire. Or maybe that was just me—I couldn’t help but feel that the world was reflecting the shifting landscape of my own emotions.

“Are you feeling popcorn or ice cream?” Stella stepped back after opening the door and took my wet jacket from me.

“Both!” I replied with a false smile.

She nodded enthusiastically. “I think that sounds like a good idea.”

I glanced at Nate’s half-open door and stopped abruptly. My heart skipped a beat. Was he here? Surely Stella would have told me if he was. A weird mix of longing and anger simmered inside of me.

Gray poked his head out from the kitchen and greeted us with a warm smile. “Perfect timing,” he said, balancing two gigantic bowls of popcorn, some of which cascaded onto the floor. “You girls want a drink?”

“Soda, please,” Stella requested.

I echoed her choice. “Same.”

Stella guided me to the couch, where I settled in the middle and curled my legs beneath me. My curiosity heightened when I noticed the anxious glances exchanged between Gray and Stella. “So, what are we watching?” I inquired, my eyes darting around the room. Their hesitation only deepened my intrigue. “Guys, what’s going on?” I pressed further. “Are you pregnant?” I playfully suggested, though the look of sheer panic on Stella’s face promptly dispelled that notion.

“No, no one is pregnant,” Gray replied with a sigh, placing our drinks on the table before sitting beside me. Stella held my hand gently as Gray turned to face me. “We need to talk.”

Stella appeared uneasy as she met my gaze. “Josie, it’s okay.”

The penny dropped like a brick on my head. “You told him?” I exclaimed, rocket fuel propelling me off my seat. How could she?

“I didn’t, I swear! He figured it out on his own.” She reached for my hand, but I pulled it away and stared at her. My heart raced in my chest, its rapid beats resembling the relentless pounding of a jackhammer.

“Please sit down,” Gray begged and ran his hand over his jaw.

“Uh-uh, I’m leaving. We are not having this conversation.” I started for the door, but Gray got up and blocked the way. “Move.” I tried to walk past him, but he grabbed both of my hands and held me still.

“Josie, please just hear me out. If you want to leave straight after, then I’ll let you. But we need to talk about this. About Nate.”

I flinched, my insides flinching too. Fudge, he knew, alright. I wondered how much Stella had told him after he figured it out. I let him lead me back to the couch and pulled my legs up under my chin, glaring out in front of me while Stella’s hand rested on my lower back.
